The Evolution of Signage Illumination

An old example of our neon tubing vs new faux-neon.

When Reg Green founded Greens the Signmakers in 1963, neon tubes were the go-to option for illuminated signage.

Fast forward six decades, and every illuminated sign we create today is lit using energy-efficient, super-bright LEDs.

But how did we get here?

Our Head of Operations, Richard, joined the company over 40 years ago, and remembers starting out hand-crafting glass tubing for neon signs.

Each tube was made by hand, which was a lengthy process of heating, bending, and then gassing them up.

As illumination technology developed, fluorescent tubes rose in popularity as a sturdier and brighter solution, marking a step toward the efficiency we have come to expect.

We were still working with these tubes just over ten years ago, but as time passed, it became impossible to ignore the promise of LEDs.

More efficient to produce and run, more consistent lighting, and more versatile due to the various shapes and sizes they are available in.

The development of LEDs opened the door for many signage staples.

Illumination has now gone full circle as we produce faux-neon signage using LEDs — replicating the charm of neon signage without the drawbacks.

Win-win.
