Our History

Timeline

From the 1940s to today.

  • 1940s

After the economic boom that followed World War II, sports enthusiast Reg Green embraced signwriting, meeting the increasing demand for shopfront and number plate painting in his home town of Hull.

  • 1963

The inception of Greens the Signmakers, the name itself a testament to Reg's forward-thinking vision, opting for "Signmakers" over “Signwriters” signifies his aspiration for growth and longevity.

  • 1973

Reg's sons, Stephen and Chris, joined the family business. Chris soon assumed the role of Managing Director in 1976.

  • 1984

Greens expanded operations by relocating to a purpose-built 26,000 sq. foot factory at Brighton Street in Hull, where we reside to this day.

  • 1985

Continuing to extend his influence, Reg took on the mantle of National President of the British Sign Association (now BSGA). With son Chris following suit as Northern President, the pair elevated the Green name in the industry.

  • 2013

Upon graduation from Oxford Brookes, Chris's son Lawrence joined Greens, gradually assuming greater responsibilities until succeeding his father as Managing Director in 2018.

  • 2021

Rebounding from the pandemic with a mammoth project for Howdens, Greens rebranded up to 20 sites a week for the brand, with a total of 280 sites across 28 weeks.

  • 2023

Greens were awarded Signage Company of the Year and the Sustainability in Signage awards at the inaugural Sign & Wrap Awards. Lawrence and the team’s continued efforts secured them a shortlist for the Sustainability Award again in 2024.

  • Present

Lawrence's commitment to sustainability is evident through his involvement with initiatives SAISAG and Oh Yes! Net Zero. Here, he champions eco-friendly practices within sign-making and beyond.
