Yorkshire Three Peaks, Thirty Years On

In April 2025, Team Greens took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks for the second time, thirty years after our first venture.

Over 24 miles long and with over 5000ft of vertical height to climb, it is no easy weekend walk!

For anyone who wanted to join, we stayed at 3peaksbunkroom behind The Golden Lion Pub both Friday and Saturday nights—a great base for the challenge that also made it easy to grab some drinks together.

We were up and started by 7:30 am Saturday morning, setting off as a team that we managed to stay grouped as to the top of the first peak, Pen Y Ghent.

Continuing down the peak and then along the valley to Whernside, we stopped while overlooking the viaduct for a refuel before starting up the second peak.

On our way up Whernside, we were overtaken by a group of fell runners—it turns out we picked the same day to do our challenge as a sizeable competition. Slightly demoralised, we pushed on up the rest of the ascent.

By the top of Whernside, we were starting to disperse into smaller groups, our feet, knees, ankles, and legs complaining.

The incredibly steep descent only added to this, meaning by the time we reached the support van at the bottom, three seats were taken for the ride back to the pub.

The now smaller group pulling up the rear aimed to make up for lost time and raced up the final peak, Ingleborough, until we reached the exceedingly steep staircase which halted our pace.

After this mammoth climb, we had a long and steady descent back down into the village.

Just when you think it’s over, it keeps going…

With a few blistered feet, swollen ankles, and aching knees, we made our way back to the bunkhouse for showers and a home-cooked meal before catching up again in the pub.

It was great to take on this challenge after about 30 years since our original expedition: the Three Peaks Challenge proved as great a team-building exercise today as it was back then.
